Albrecht Gehse, born on 19th January 1955,
comes from a Southern German family of artists.

One of the great maternal ancestors of the family is Jacob Grimm, one of the Grimm Brothers. From the paternal side, there is a kinship to Dietrich Bonhoeffer ( executed in 1945 because of resistance to Hitler ) and Rüdiger Schleicher (also executed in 1945 for the same reason, Freisler's last death sentence). 

This is worth mentioning because the cultural and political climate of the family, as well as the break that was caused by the division of Germany (which meant a separation from the painter-grandfather), had quite a formative influence on the artistic development of A. Gehse.

Albrecht Gehse grew up with 4 siblings, Angelika, Roberta, Marcus and Daniela.

After completing an apprenticeship in Polygraphy he accomplished his military service, followed by the studies of Art from 1976-81 at the University of Graphics and Book Art in Leipzig.
Mayer-Foreyt und Harry Blume. Bernhard Heisig unterrichtet ihn in der Fachklasse für Malerei. Hier knüpft er erste Kon­takte zu Wolfgang Peuker, Sieghard Gille, Arno Rink und Hartwig Ebersbach. Nach Abschluss des Studiums mit Diplom im Jahr 1981 beginnt Albrecht Gehse die frei­ schaffende Arbeit in Leipzig, anfangs innerhalb der Künstlergruppe 37,2, zu der u.a. Hans­ Joachim Schulze, Hartwig Ebersbach, Wolfgang A. Scheffler und Trak Wendisch gehören. 1984 wird er Mitglied im Verband Bildender Künstler der DDR und erhält im selben Jahr in der Ausstellung “Junge Künstler der DDR- 1984”, die im Alten Museum der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin stattfindet, den Sonderpreis. 1984 Heirat mit Jenny Blaßkiewitz (Schei­dung 2004).

Von 1987 bis 1990 ist Albrecht Gehse Meisterschüler an der Akademie der Künste der DDR in Berlin bei Prof. Bernhard Heisig. ln dieser Zeit hat er auch Kontakte zu Werner Tübke. Albrecht Gehse arbeitet und lebt seit seinem Umzug von Leipzig im Jahr 1991 in Berlin-Tier­ garten und Charlottenburg, sein Atelier befindet sich auf der Insel Eiswerder/Spandauer See. 2002/2003 malt Albrecht Gehse das Bildnis “Bundeskanzler a.D. Helmut Kohl” für die Kanzlergalerie des Bundeskanzleramtes Berlin. Seit 2006 arbeitet Albrecht Gehse an dem Zyklus “Aufruhr – 50 Bilder über die Welt”. 2008 Heirat mit Denisa Kurowska. Albrecht Gehse hat vier Kinder (Konrad, geb. 1980, Constatin, geb. 1982, Maya, geb. 1984, Ronja, geb. 1989).

Albrecht Gehse participated in numerous national and international exhibitions but also had various solo exhibitions throughout the years. There are a lot of books, catalogues, contributions on TV and reviews on his work. Gehse won numerous prices, i. a. the Special Award of the exhibition “Young Artists in the GDR” at Old Museum Berlin in 1984. The works of Gehse, i. a. paintings related to buildings, can be found in museums, public collections, institutions, banks, insurance companies, churches, law offices as well as in large national and international private collections.
