Gehse wants his audience to be inflamed. To achieve this, he is prepared to tumble through even the most opaque worlds. Some sections of the picture vibrate with anarchic wildness, like testosterone-driven muscle rock, while others come across as spun. All sonar devices are on recording standby. Gehse's oeuvre is not one-dimensional; it has gradually developed into a kaleidoscope of possibilities and modes of representation with a pronounced wealth of variations.
In his Cycle of the Powerful (2025), he strips the rose deceivers of world politics of their invisibility cloaks. The painting-specific dislocation of the moment when the deceivers slip out of the frame is Gehse's greatest feat. We see a concatenation of conglomerates open to discourse, which take on the cathartic function of driving into the fodder of debate with all the free-spiritedness one could wish for.
